Why alpacas?

Alpacas are appealing animals, whether peacefully grazing, leaping & bounding across the pasture at dusk, or 'strutting their stuff' in the showring.  But the real value of alpacas is  their ability to produce  luxuriously soft fleece.

Highly prized by the fashion houses of Europe and Japan, the best grades of alpaca are  stronger and lighter than wool, and as  soft as cashmere.  Like cashmere, the finest alpaca fiber is suitable for three-season wear.  With reasonable care, fine garments, capes, throws and other items made of alpaca can become  heirlooms that last for generations.  Silky to the touch with a slight sheen, 'Royal' and 'Baby' grade alpaca is  truly an investment in luxury.

The ultra-fine fiber produced by the alpacas of the ancient Incan Empire in the highlands of Peru was the 'coin of the realm', used in place of money.  After the arrival of the Conquistadors, many alpacas were lost, either to make room for European livestock or victims of diseases brought to the isolated region from the Old World.  In the chaos that always follows war and conquest,  the art of alpaca breeding was forgotten.

At Inti Alpacas, our goal is to help recreate the ancient Incan Alpaca.  Through rigorous selection and carefully planned matings, the genes of those legendary alpacas - finer by far than nearly any living alpaca today - are being 'uncovered' and preserved in the bloodlines of the Inti herd.

As more people become concerned about the environmental damage caused by the  production, and the later disposal, of petroleum-based fake 'fleece' and other man-made  fibers, they are rediscovering natural fibers.  The development of an eco-friendly 'green' alpaca fiber industry in the US has significant growth potential.  This will support a continuing market for quality alpacas.

Offering the opportunity to combine your lifestyle and investment goals - alpaca farming

Alpacas are not for everyone, but they are owned and enjoyed by many people for many different reasons:

Some enjoy them as 'solar powered' mowers, or to fulfill 'farmland' requirements to qualify for reduced property tax rates.

Others keep a few males as a source of fabulous fiber to spin, knit, felt, or weave - or to sell to other fiber artists and craftsmen.

Retired couples have discovered that alpacas are easily handled and cared for, and do not require elaborate facilities.  Families enjoy sharing the chores and the joys of raising alpacas with their children.  They may travel to shows on the weekends, where the youngsters can exhibit in  agility and showmanship classes, or in the regular classes alongside adults.  After a hectic day in the 'rat race', working couples find peace in tending their herd together.

Some discover alpacas while searching for a home based business suitable for a rural location.  Alpacas are livestock that can be raised - profitably - on a small scale on limited acreage.

Passive investors can  board their alpacas at an established alpaca farm, and will still enjoy some, though not all, of the financial and tax benefits available to those actively farming alpacas.  Consult your
tax professional for details.
